Robert Mattson has over ten years experience as a massage therapist and over two years as an esthetician. Robert descends from a family of many massage therapists, dating back to the early 1900’s. His great grandmother emigrated from Finland to the United States as a practicing massage therapist. His mother also practiced massage therapy for many years, until she had to retire due the physical nature of the work. Robert credits his expertise as a therapist to decades of family experience. He says that he most enjoys listening to clients and then specifically addressing their expressed needs and concerns.
Read below how Robert conquered a 20 year smoking habit and about his charity massage work for local Muscular Sclerosis organizations.
“I started donating my services at…
local Muscular Sclerosis charity events years ago after learning about these through some friends. It seemed like a great fit to donate massage therapy — since Muscular Sclerosis is characterized by progressive weakness and degeneration of the muscles. I bring my massage chair to the event and donate massages for guests to receive. This generates interest (and funds) for the charity and brings more people to the event.”
“I have been smoke free for a year and a half, …
after having been a smoker for 20 years. I know it sounds strange that a healthcare worker, such as a massage therapist, was an addicted smoker, but no one is perfect. A buddy of mine told me a trick that worked for him and me. Choose a date that you will quit, at least one month away, and repeat it constantly. For example, say “October 18th I will quit smoking forever”, and repeat it every day, over and over. Then, quit on that day and continue to repeat the mantra after “quit day” for reinforcement. The key is that you must really want “it” and be willfully committed to quitting. Staying smoke free is still a challenge every day.”
“I got my esthetician license for several reasons.
After years of practicing as a massage therapist, I was determined to further my education and skills in order to provide more services to my clients. There is a special relaxation that comes from having both a massage and a facial from the same therapist in the same treatment room. I wanted to be able to perform facials and skin care for my clients, rather than hand them off to the other estheticians after their massages. While working at ZenSpa, I noticed that client’s chose the massage/facial combination more than any other treatment combination at the spa, and the dual-licensed therapists who provided these were the busiest therapists. All of these things motivated me to get my esthetician license. I think my clients have been pleased ever since!
Because I’m a massage therapist, too, my massage skills can enhance a facial. I not only massage the face, but also pay special attention to hands, feet, shoulders, and scalp. My client’s relax with the additional skill and care I give to the massage portion of the facial, and that makes them (and me) happy”.
